If you google 'Matchbox Palm Springs' you will see warnings from sites like Yelp saying the restaurant has permanently closed, but general manager Dusty Edwards wants you to know that Matchbox isn’t closing, it’s changing.
The downtown Palm Springs restaurant changed owners August 1, parting ways with their parent company Matchbox Food Group, which manages Matchbox locations in other parts of the U.S. as well as the restaurant chains Ted’s Bulletin and DC-3.
'We have decided to close Palm Springs after more than 10 years as we refocus our growth and streamline operations focusing on personal growth,' Matchbox founder Ty Neal said in an email. 'We thank our team members and our guests tremendously.'
The location was sold to Robert Gary who, Edwards said, has years of experience as an entrepreneur but would not give more details without him present. After three days of overseeing staff operations, Gary decided to leave it as a restaurant, Edwards said.
Under the new management, Matchbox will remain the name of the eatery for a period of 120 days.
The restaurant will continue to serve the same menu during that time while giving customers a preview of the new menu items through specials.
“We’ll be creating entrees, offer them to the guests, get their feedback on it and see what they like,” Edwards said. “We’re going to create our menu based on our guests’ requests.”
Edwards said the restaurant will have a new name and new menu, still keeping some Matchbox favorites, at the end of the 120 days. Clawhammer banjo.
In the meantime, manager Jamie Griffin said the restaurant is open to the public and ready to serve.
Edwards said the staff and new management are excited to support local businesses as the restaurant itself becomes an independent establishment.
“Yesterday when I went home I was so exhausted,” new office manager Mylo Simorangkir said. “But it was a good exhaustion. I am so excited, I feel like I’ve been reborn and that this is where I belong .. I like the dynamics and I can’t wait for this place to get packed again.”
